The aim of the EU-funded Horizon Europe READJUST project is to achieve a just transition to a green and digital future for all. It addresses the inequalities created or exacerbated by the twin green and digital transitions, with a focus on mobility and agri-food.
Researcher Somendra Narayan is the simulator’s lead developer. His colleague Taghi Ramezan Zadeh leads the UvA team in READJUST. Both are assistant professors in the Strategy & International Business section at Amsterdam Business School.
The platform builds on READJUST research into the factors driving inequalities in the twin transition and the conditions that enable fairer outcomes. The EU-funded Horizon Europe project investigates inequalities arising from the green and digital transitions, with a focus on mobility and agri-food.
Users build policy scenarios from carbon pricing, subsidies and reskilling measures, then run them against regions that differ in their starting conditions and in the capacity of their institutions to deliver. The simulator compares what the outcomes for employment, income inequality, emissions and regional disparity. What emerges most clearly is that the capacity to absorb and implement a policy is just as important for outcomes as the design of the policy itself.
The simulator, its documentation, its calibrated parameters and its source code are all openly available, so that the results can be checked and the model reused.
