The Dutch Blockchain Week took place in Amsterdam in the last week of May. The University of Amsterdam and AI4FinTech were involved as partners. Amsterdam School of Economics researcher Simon Trimborn co-led the Hackathon and was a member of the jury.

Additionally, Impact Developer Mark Siebert (IXA UvA) engaged with partner organisations like ABN-AMRO, EY and the Police service to ensure a viable connection beyond the hackathon for the AI4Fintech ecosystem.

The Blockchain Week brought together knowledge institutions and the corporate sector to explore how emerging technologies like blockchain, digital assets and Web3 are transforming the way we live, work and interact.

Addressing misconceptions

The Hackathon featured 12 teams who competed in 2 tracks. They were presented with the challenge of developing AI-driven compliance agents that can:

  • Detect non-compliant transactions
  • Flag high-risk activities
  • Prevent fraud and cybersecurity threats
  • Automate regulatory reporting

The purpose of the challenge was to develop solutions that not only streamline business compliance, but also to create a safer ecosystem for all. There’s a misconception that blockchain is primarily used for illicit activities. The Hackathon fosters greater trust and helps drive mainstream adoption. This helps prove blockchain’s potential to be used as a force for public good.

Trimborn was impressed by the 2 winning teams: ‘GhostKYC truly impressed us with a fully functioning AI Chat, checking the blockchain in real time to determine if a wallet or transaction is linked to illicit activity. The second winner, Legal Ledger Legends, came up with a really innovative approach for selectively checking transactions for compliance while avoiding detection tools.’
