His winning paper, University as a Melting Pot: Long-term Effects of Internationalization, explores the long-term impact of international students on native students in higher education.

Policy relevance

The annual workshop brought together promising early-career researchers working on education economics. The programme featured 14 plenary paper presentations, keynote talks, and poster sessions. Avdeev’s paper stood out for its empirical rigour and policy relevance.

Avdeev specialises in empirical microeconomics, with a focus on the economics of education and health. His research uses quasi-experimental methods and draws on both administrative and survey data to assess the long-term effects of policy changes.

After completing a Research Master’s in Economics at the Tinbergen Institute in 2022, he began his PhD at the University of Amsterdam. He is supervised by Hessel Oosterbeek (University of Amsterdam) and Bas van der Klaauw (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), both affiliated with the Tinbergen Institute.
