The Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) has appointed Dr 'ingenieur' (ir.) Bas Kolen as Professor by special appointment of Enterprise Risk Management, starting 1 September 2024.

He will hold this position for 1 day a week within the Actuarial Science and Mathematical Finance research programme at the Amsterdam School of Economics. This chair has been made possible by the Stichting Assurantiebeurs Amsterdam.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. This has led to an increase in associated financial risks. Kolen's research focuses on risk and crisis management, particularly the development of models for managing flood risks. He has extensive experience in this field, having made numerous contributions to national and international research projects in collaboration with academic institutions, governments, and businesses.

As a professor by special appointment, Kolen will focus on the quantitative modelling of climate risks and the impact of the associated transitions on the insurance sector. Through his position in this chair, he will also contribute to the development and transfer of knowledge to insurers, water and environmental managers, and policymakers.

About Bas Kolen

Kolen studied Civil Engineering and Management at the University of Twente and earned his PhD in 2013 from Radboud University, focusing on the effectiveness of crisis management in reducing flood risks. Since 1999, he has worked at the consultancy firm HKV lijn in water on various climate-related issues, serving as both Scientific Director and Senior Advisor in the field of risk and disaster management. Since 2015, he has also been affiliated with Delft University of Technology, including work within the Pandemic & Disaster Preparedness Center.
