The newly appointed professor will join ASE’s Economics of Taxation section (Fiscale Economie). In his research and teaching, he will focus on what he calls ‘seamless taxation’. This refers to the possibilities of integrating (the levying of) taxes more and more into daily life and business activities. The subject matter includes the new ‘alpha generation, the successors of generation X. This group has its own view of society and responsibilities. Sustainability plays an important role in their lives. They are growing up with smart phones, a digital economy without borders, and calls for fair taxation of multinationals.
'These societal developments are expected to lead to a different role for taxes in our society', says Snippe. In his research Snippe will focus on how ‘seamless taxation’ will contribute to a transparent and fair (fiscal) economy. This is multidisciplinary research related to macroeconomics, microeconomics, tax law and sociology. There will be collaboration within the university as well as with private and governmental organisations. According to Snippe, ‘co-creation is the key to taking our joint responsibility in the fiscal-economy to a seamless way of taxation’.
‘We’re very happy with Dr Marcel Snippe’s appointment’, says UvA EB dean Roel Beetsma. His credentials are impressive. He has extensive academic experience, a background as a policy-maker at the Ministry of Finance, and he has chaired various OECD working groups. This makes him an ideal lecturer and researcher. Both his students and colleagues can learn a lot from him. His interests include taxation in an international context and taxation of digital business. These topics are at the core of the current public debate.
Snippe qualified as a Chartered Accountant at the the Netherlands Institute of Chartered Accountants (NBA) in 1997. He obtained his initial degree in Information Management at Nyenrode Business University in the same year. In 2019, Snippe completed his doctoral research at Erasmus University Rotterdam with his doctoral thesis The Integration of Fiscal Data within the Context of Nationwide Supervision, A research for a safe harbour of the fiscal information wealth. Before joining the UvA, he worked as a public-sector accountant at the Dutch Ministry of Finance and the Tax and Customs Administration.
