Quinten Meertens (ASE Quantitative Economics section), has developed a new method to better estimate spending by Dutch consumers in foreign webshops (within the EU). The method was developed in collaboration with researchers at Leiden University and Statistics Netherlands.

An article was published on this topic in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society.

The method’s strength lies in both the use of new data sources as well as the application of advanced analysis methods. What’s more, the article also refers to a statistical machine learning bias that is often overlooked.

The estimates found for the amount of money spent by Dutch consumers at foreign webshops (within the EU) is no less than 6 times higher than earlier estimates. The method (in modified form) is now also being used by Statistics Netherlands for the purpose of quarterly publications on EU webshop purchases.
