The new ASE professor will develop and analyse human mortality models that provide insight into the impact of increasing life expectancy on society. In particular, he will focus on stochastic models that show the influence of the socio-economic environment and lifestyle factors on a population’s mortality rate. Such models are then applied to quantify the longevity gap between different socio-economic groups. He also uses this information to investigate the effect of an aging population on public pension systems.

Teaching

Kleinow will teach courses on actuarial modelling and financial mathematics for the BSc Actuarial Science and MSc in Actuarial Science and Mathematical Finance programmes.

Amsterdam School of Economics chair Peter Boswijk: ‘Torsten Kleinow’s appointment will give ASE’s actuarial research on mortality and life expectancy an important boost. And as the new director of the Research Centre for Longevity Risk, he will also play a key role in the collaboration between academia, policy-makers, insurers and pension funds. He will work with these parties to take on the challenge of dealing with the consequences of changing life expectancy.’
