On Friday 8 June, Prof. Michael Ellman received the ‘Stapenning’ honorary award from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) during a special event marking his departure as Professor of Economic Systems with special reference to Transition Economics. Rector Magnificus Prof. Dymph van den Boom presented this award to him. Prof. Ellman has received this honour for his excellent academic achievements and his tireless dedication to the UvA, and the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) in particular.
Michael Ellman started his career at the UvA as associate professor at the FEB in 1975. In 1978, he was appointed Professor of Economics of Centrally Planned Economies and he was named Professor of Economic Systems with special reference to Transition Economics in 1995. Ellman has numerous articles, books and academic publications to his name on, among other things, centrally planned economies and transition economies, especially with regards to Russian economics and the economic and political history of the Soviet Union. He is currently busy with a new edition of his magnum opus Socialist Planning, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 1989.
Ellman’s involvement with the UvA was also reflected in his willingness to take on executive tasks. He was a member of the Senate and the advisory committee which provides both solicited and unsolicited advice to the Executive Board. From 2001 to 2005, he was chairman of the Department of Economics (now part of the Amsterdam School of Economics) and from 2007 to 1 April 2012, Ellman was chairman of the Department of Business Studies of the Amsterdam Business School.
