Economies of scope and scale in banking
Questions concerning economies of scale and scope in the banking sector as topical as ever. Both the financial sector as a whole and individual banks have grown ever larger, even in the wake of the financial crisis. Mark Dijkstra investigates whether economies of scale and scope exist in banking and whether they are the result of implicit governmental subsidies and market power. He takes insights from a large-scale, multi-year empirical investigation in multiple European countries and applies these to a case study of the ABN AMRO bank during the 1997-2007 period.
