Students compete for the world championship in Econometrics

22 March 2017

Who will dethrone 2016's winner Harvard in the Econometric Game this year? From 5 through 7 April 120 students from across the world will compete for the world championship in Econometrics. The Econometric Game’s theme this year is Crime & Safety.

The Econometric Game is organised by the UvA’s Actuarial Sciences, Econometrics and Operational Research & Management (VSAE) study association of the UvA’s Faculty of Economics and Business. The event enjoys a prestigious reputation among econometrists around the world.

The Econometric Game is hugely popular. Each year, the number of entries far outstrip the number of available places, which is why only the 30 best universities are invited to send a delegation of two PhDs and two Master’s students to Amsterdam. Along with the University of Amsterdam, universities from 18 different countries will participate, including Harvard University, Oxford University, University of Lausanne and  McGill University.

Solving social problems

The participating teams will have three days to solve a major social problem using econometrics. Frank de Zwart, chair of the Econometric Game 2017: ‘The content of the case will not be divulged until 5 April. However, teams are aware that the problem lies in the field of Crime & Safety’. In previous years teams tackled problems related to access to healthcare, and dealing with the challenges of an aging population.

On Friday 7 April, ten finalists will present their solutions for the case. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
Time and Location: 18:45 – 20:00, Compagnietheater, Kloveniersburgwal 50, Amsterdam.

In addition to the Econometric Game VSAE is also organizing a Spui25 debate on 3 April on the subject of big data, security and criminality.
