“Don’t be afraid to customise what you have been offered so it better meets your needs. This applies to your academic curriculum, your personal development plan, etc. Within boundaries, there is always some room to manoeuver!”

Comprehensive Education
“During my bachelors, I received a comprehensive education (University College). I loved it, but it was also time for a bit more focus. That’s why I deliberately choose for the Economics programme and I was already very certain of my track choice before starting. I enjoyed most courses, especially the track courses.
Even though the curriculum was quite set in stone, I enjoyed expanding my curriculum with extra courses, especially those from the UvA’s Interdisciplinary Institute (IIS). “
Extra Curricular activities
“Besides studying, I have always enjoyed engaging in extracurricular activities resulting in a broad range of experiences. For example, I have taken on various roles within “De Kleine Consultant (DKC)”. DKC is a student-run strategy consultancy firmt. I also joined The Master Career Club Economics of the Sefa study Association and I was involved in the Red Cross, where I provide emergency first aid during events like King’s Day and Memorial Day, but also during a crisis situation.. Compared to the more academic extracurricular activities, this volunteer work is very hands-on with a direct interaction with a wide range of people.
I also spent some time doing internships at various companies (research, consultancy and finance). People often asked me why I chose an internship after graduation, but it really helped me to figure out what I truly wanted and bridge the gap between studying and working.”
PhD
“My history teacher in high school decided to pursue a PhD at a later age. On one of my history papers, he commented that he was sure that one day I too would obtain my PhD. I think that idea got stuck in my head.
After graduating I decided to at least take a shot at obtaining a PhD since I might regret it later if I didn’t. I also applied for more consultancy-type jobs. Knowing from friends that doing a PhD can be extremely lonely and intense, I promised myself I would only apply for topics that I was passionate about even if I did not completely fit the criteria.. I was so happy when I received the go-ahead at Tilburg University’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Social Psychology department.”
Ex-Thesis Club
“When writing our final thesis, we created an app group called the “Thesis club”. Even after graduation, this app group still exists. We did changed the name to “Ex-thesis club”. All of us are on different career paths, making it not only fun but also inspiring to meet up for drinks! I am also still in contact with my fellow committee members from the Study Association Sefa Master Career Club Economics. Even though some have crossed borders, it is nice to stay in touch. Facebook, LinkedIn and UvA Bridge help me keep an eye on what everyone is up to as well!”
Tips
“People often refer to extracurricular activities as CV enhancers. Obviously, they are, but for me it was much more important to pick them according to my interests and passions; something that gives me energy! Recruiters tend to pick up on this energy and enthusiasm! Furthermore, don’t be afraid to customise what you have been offered so it better meets your needs. This applies to your academic curriculum, your personal development plan, etc. Within boundaries, there is always room to manoeuvre !”
